Climate Change

Climate change is one of the most significant and fastest growing threats to cultural heritage worldwide. ICOMOS-Nigeria supports various actions that respond to the risks that climate change poses to cultural heritage, while promoting heritage as a source of resilience.

ICOMOS-Nigeria is committed to climate action, particularly from the intersection between climate change and cultural heritage. As part of its commitment to climate action, ICOMOS-Nigeria is part of the Climate Heritage Network (CHN),  a global network committed to mobilising arts, culture and heritage to address climate change and support communities in achieving the ambitions of the Paris Agreement.  The Network seeks to scale up culture-based climate action and to foreground the cultural dimensions of climate policy through coordination and cooperation among its members.

ICOMOS-Nigeria partnered with several CHN members, and with the generous funding of the UK government, in the CVI-Africa project. In Nigeria, the project focused on assessing the vulnerability of the Sukur Cultural Landscape World Heritage Site to climate change. The CVI workshop for Sukur took place in September 2021 at the American University of Nigeria in Adamawa State. Participants included site managers, academics, Sukur community representatives, civil society and relevant government agencies. A copy of the CVI-Sukur report can be downloaded here.
